The Jilting of Granny Weatherall Essay Example For Students
The Jilting of Granny Weatherall Essay The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, a short story by Katherine Anne Porter, describes the last thoughts, feelings, and memories of an elderly woman. As Granny Weatheralls life literally flashes before her eyes, the importance of the title of the story becomes obvious. Granny Weatherall has been in some way deceived or disappointed in every love relationship of her life. Her past lover George, husband John, daughter Cornelia, and God all did an injustice by what be a mixture of strength, bitterness, and ultimate fear as she faces her last moments of life. Granny gained her strength by the people that she felt jilted by. George stood Granny up at the altar. He never showed at all it is never stated that she heard from him again. The pain forced Granny to be strong as is proven by her thoughts when she was asked if anything could be done for her. The Jilting of Granny Weatherall In Katherine Ann Porters The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, there are two themes. The first is self-pity. The second theme is the acceptance of her death. The theme of self-pity is obvious and thoroughly explored early on. As a young lady, Granny Weatherall left at the altar on her wedding day. As a result, the pathetic woman feels sorry for herself for the rest of her life. She becomes a bitter old woman who is suspicious of everyone around her. This point is shown early in the story when the do Granny Weatherall, the main character in Katherine Anne Porters The Jilting of Granny Weatherall, is an 80-year-old elderly woman who is at the doorstep of death. There is a sense of disillusionment with Granny that leads readers to develop their own interpretation of her relationship with Cornelia, her daughter As the narrator, Granny unknowingly would paint the picture of Cornelia as nuisance and bothersome. In fact, the reader can rationalize that it is just Cornelias concern for an ailing mother that creates the situation of her seemingly being there all the time. Granny is having mental flashbacks as death approaches like a fog rose over the valley 1296. Granny recalls events throughout her life, from being left at the altar on her wedding day, to losing a child, to coming to grips with her own death as the story reaches a close. All of these recollections and the realization of her death bring together the great ironies of the story, ironies which cause not one but two jiltings for Granny. As you read the story, the first irony becomes apparent on her deathbed, the memory of a love lost which has been suppressed for 60 years resurfaces. It is magnified in such a way showing that though she had tried to forget George. The setting for The Jilting of Granny Weatherall is the bedroom where Granny Weatherall is dying, though most of the action occurs in Grannys head. Told as a stream-of-consciousness monologue, The Jilting of Granny Weatherall is the story of the last day in the eighty-year-old womans life. In her final hours with her surviving children around her bed, Granny Weatherall reconsiders her life and ponders her impending death. Almost against her will, her thoughts return to an incident that occurred more than sixty years earlier: She was left standing alone at the altar when her fiancÃÆ'Ã © George jilted her. A portrait of an eighty-year-old woman on her deathbed, The Jilting of Granny Weatherall is an exploration of the human mind as it struggles to come to terms with loss and mortality. Porter offers no clear resolution to these fundamental issues, but instead interweaves themes of betrayal, religion, death, and memory in a moving and poetic character study. The titles of both the story and the anthology {Flowering Judas} in which it first appeared suggest the idea of betrayal, a central theme underlying many of Porters stories. Judas was the disciple who betrayed Christ with a kiss. .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 , .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .postImageUrl , .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 , .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92:hover , .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92:visited , .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92:active { border:0!important; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92:active , .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92 .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u301149cc201b9cd460033720c26b9a92:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Analyse the encomium on marriage showing EssayAt the heart of The Jilting of Granny Weatherall are Grannys memories of her betrayal by George, the One of the most striking stylistic aspects of The Jilting of Granny Weatherall is its unusual narrative perspective. Though the story is written in the third person, its narrative point of view is extremely close to that of the central character, Granny Weatherall. The story is told through stream-of-consciousness. Grannys thoughts are presented in a spontaneous fashion, as if readers had access to her. Jilting means you have been kept from something that was meant to be yours. Most often used in terms that one is jilted at the alter or their prospective spouse doesnt show up to get married Granny Weatherall is jilted at the alter then again when she doesnt see a sign from God when she is dying-kind of like she was waiting for God to come get her and he doesnt-so is jilted twice. On her death bed, surrounded by her children, doctor and priest, a memory of 60 years ago, the day she was jilted by her husband-to-be, could no longer be repressed by Granny Weatherall- the thought of him was a smoky cloud from hell that moved and crept in her head . . . Voices and visions, imagined and real, mingle and merge throughout the story as this hardy woman, one who has weathered so much, lives out her final moments. Ironically, Granny Weatherall is jilted for a second time when the final sign shes been waiting for from Jesus never appears. For the second time there was no sign. Again no bridegroom and the priest in the house . . . She stretched herself with a deep breath and blew out the light.

Erasmus and Castiglione essays
Erasmus and Castiglione essays Religion and social acceptance played paramount roles in the Renaissance and the Reformation, each through different paths of idealism. Here we discover how two separate elements interact and become one in human fulfillment. The study of Erasmus and Castiglione, two individuals, that have so clearly shaped religion and society today, has truly been eye opening for me. As I read their works and try to analyze the elements that drive them forward, I see many attributes of myself within them, including spiritual soul searching, the desire for social acceptance and yes, vanity. I am stimulated as to how the two paths so clearly cross and eventually become one. Erasmus was a key element in Northern Christian Humanism, which was more concerned with theology, creating a movement for moral and religious reform. The thread of religion is deeply seated in the Renaissance but, Castiglione was better known as the arbiter of aristocratic manners. He demanded, that the preservance of composure and self-control must be maintained under all circumstances (Pegasokseen). Erasmus was one of the greatest scholars of all time and worked diligently in the defense of cultural language, the revision of Christian traditions and the renewal of the educational system. He was known as the Prince of Humanists (Ciger). Castiglione, on the other hand, focused on the behavioral attributes; he studied the changes in the late medieval culture and effectively created a guide book for the elite to gain attention and favor. We are the sum of our perceptions, but as I see these two, I look at the many facets that shape our lives. Erasmus, in the spiritual light of better understanding our faith, and the need for higher education. Castiglione, in the realism of the here and now, the need for social acceptance, and affirmation. The need for balance in our lives is extremely important, and when you combine realism with spi...

Research Analysis - Essay Example The hypothesis being tested is : Would a certain discussion type have a significant influence on rigorous instruction? The study adapted the concept of Academic Rigor as a means of measuring reading comprehension. This was specifically used since the researchers believed that Academic Rigor is one of the Principles of Learning that engages active use of knowledge among learners. The researchers learning expectations were quite high since they wanted to observe critical thinking among participants. Among the literature review, the study cited Brownââ¬â¢s collaborative dialogue. Brownââ¬â¢s theory is often used in what we call collaborative classroomsâ⬠wherein knowledge is shared between teachers and students. Teachers do not only use skill but ââ¬Å"also value and build upon the knowledge, personal experiences, language, strategies, and culture that students bring to the learning situationâ⬠( Tinzmann, et.al, 1990). The study also mentioned the concept of Academic Rigor which is often misunderstood. Actually , a good definition of academic rigor is ââ¬Å" sufficient time be devoted to a topic or unit of study and that students would have an opportunity to explore it in depth, developing questions as they go alongâ⬠( Chapter 7:A-4, state.gov., 2005). Apparently, a lot of educators today have the wrong perception of this term resulting to unmet expectations in classroom learning. The study also presented Applebeeââ¬â¢s study on the importance of disc ussion-based activities. However, Adler st.al ( 2003) emphasized that discussion is effective if it is monologic wherein the teacher does not confine the lesson through lecture and seatwork. Discussion-based is not a new concept anymore but a more important thing is how it is being implemented in the classroom. In short, the literature review emphasizes the importance of collaborative dialogue, types of classroom talks that can enhance learning and the applicability of Academic Rigor in promoting
